THEPA MAKGATLA-LEPHALE
A community activist with special interest in literacy development, education and women empowerment. Makgatla’s activism started in 2001, at age 16 when she was recruited in the National Council of African Women youth wing. In tertiary, she was a student activist and leader both political and apolitical structures where she led organizations such as Black Management Forum Student Chapter, Member of Student Parliament and also debate society. She led various community organizations including and not limited to Molemole youth council, Botlokwa Community Radio station board, Bohle Education Trust. In 2015, She decided to shift her focus to education and literature when she formed a reading club called Ponelopele reading club and library, which its success story is recorded over the years. What started as a book club with six children from the neighbourhood, grew to a library with a building structure and container library with more than 60 children. It is the work of Ponelopele that saw Makgatla being recognized as one of top200 Mail and Gurdian young South Africans. For five years, she worked as a part-time lecturer for Public Administration at Capricorn College for TVET, which the college awarded her an achievement and certificate of excellence for producing 100 % pass rate for the year 2021. Makgatla is also a social commentator who is often invited on local radio stations to give commentary on women empowerment issues and also literacy issue. Makgatla is a Masters student of Public Administration, and also busy studying Advanced Diploma in TVET. She is married to Matome Chidi and blessed with four children. She is currently the founder of all women book club called Sistas in books book club and also Chairperson of Ponelopele reading club and library. She is also a full time public servant stationed at Capricorn College for TVET as a procurement officer.
